Appetite

Appetite Suppressant OTC: What Supplements Can and Cannot Show

Quick answer

An appetite suppressant OTC product, in practice, is a dietary supplement. FDA does not approve supplements, and NIH says little is known about their effect on weight. Prescription weight medicines are a separate group a clinician decides on. For common ingredients we found small or no evidence on appetite, and no trial tested SodaSlim.

Two groups

What is an appetite suppressant OTC, and how is it different from a prescription?

An appetite suppressant sold over the counter is, in practice, a dietary supplement, while prescription weight medicines are tested and approved as drugs.

FDA says it does not approve supplements before sale (FDA 101 supplements). NIDDK describes prescription medicines separately: they are for people with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 with related problems, and lifestyle comes first (NIDDK, Prescription weight medications). A shelf supplement carries none of that screening.

Evidence

Do appetite suppressant pills work? What the usual ingredients show

For the usual ingredients we found small or no human evidence on appetite itself, and the label wording is not a result.

NIH's fact sheet says little is known about weight-loss supplements and that raspberry ketone has been studied only in combination (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss). The one appetite-related finding in our sources is about food fibre: viscous fibres reduced appetite in 59% of comparisons against 14% for others, with small effects on weight (Wanders 2011, fibre and appetite).

The meter below is an editor's reading of how well human studies support each of SodaSlim's rows "for weight, appetite or metabolism". It is not a measurement, and it does not rate the product.

  • Green Coffee

    Small and uncertain

Meta-analyses found small average differences of about 1 to 2 kg in short trials of low quality; the label has about 65 mg of chlorogenic acids. (Onakpoya 2011, green coffee review) (Asbaghi 2020, green coffee meta)

  • No human trial of raspberry ketone alone was found; the animal work used very large amounts in feed. (Morimoto 2005, raspberry ketone mice) (Lopez 2013, multi-ingredient raspberry ketone)

  • Garcinia

    Very little

A JAMA trial found no difference from placebo, and a pooled analysis found under 1 kg with an interval touching zero. (Heymsfield 1998, garcinia RCT) (Onakpoya 2011, garcinia meta)

  • Caffeine

    Small and uncertain

A meta-analysis found caffeine 'might promote' weight loss, but results varied widely and the studies were small; the label's 138 mg is about a third of the FDA reference. (FDA, Spilling the Beans caffeine) (EFSA, caffeine safe intakes)

  • Green Tea

    Very little

The Cochrane review found a 0.04 kg difference outside Japan, which it called not likely clinically important. (Jurgens 2012, Cochrane green tea) (EFSA 2018, green tea catechins)

Our plain reading of the research linked on each row, for weight, appetite or metabolism, on a 0 to 4 scale. It rates the ingredient as studied, at the studied amounts. It does not rate SodaSlim: no study has tested the capsule, and its amounts are far smaller.

Teas and drinks

Does appetite suppressant tea work?

We found no trial showing that green tea, or any tea, curbs appetite in people.

NCCIH says green tea may have a modest effect on body weight (NCCIH, Green tea). A Cochrane review found 0.04 kg outside Japan. EFSA says tea infusions are generally fine, while EGCG supplements at 800 mg a day are a concern. A cup of tea and a concentrated extract are not the same thing.

Side effects

Why can appetite suppressants cause side effects?

They can cause side effects because a stimulant acts on the whole body, not on hunger alone.

Effects that can come with common ingredients

CaffeineJitters, fast heartbeat, poor sleep (FDA, Spilling the Beans caffeine)
GarciniaStomach events; liver injury reports
Green tea extractInteractions with medicines; liver injury reports

SodaSlim

Where does SodaSlim fit?

SodaSlim is a supplement capsule whose front reads “Metabolic & Appetite Support*”, and we found no trial of it.

The star leads to the FDA statement. The label also prints “Supports Craving Control & Satiety*”. We found no source showing the five rows do that, and the benefits page sets each line against the evidence. It is a capsule, not a soda. Pack options follow.

FAQ

SodaSlim questions people ask

Are there appetite suppressants you can buy without a prescription?

Supplements are sold over the counter with appetite wording, but we found no source showing they work as the ads imply. FDA does not approve them. A prescription medicine is a separate route, set by a clinician.

Do appetite suppressant pills have side effects?

Yes, they can. Caffeine can cause jitters and poor sleep, and garcinia and green tea extracts have liver-injury reports. Dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, or belly pain means stop and get care.

What helps with fullness other than pills?

Our sources point to viscous fibre in food, enough sleep and regular movement. A review found short sleep raised intake by about 385 calories a day. A clinician can discuss other options.
