Caffeine budget: how much caffeine per day, and where SodaSlim fits

Quick answer

A caffeine budget is the total from every source in one day. FDA's reference for healthy adults is 400 mg a day, and supplements count. One SodaSlim capsule has at least 138 mg from the caffeine row alone, about a third of that figure, before any coffee, tea, cola or energy drink.

The numbers

How much caffeine per day is the usual limit?

For healthy adults, FDA says 400 mg of caffeine a day is not generally linked to dangerous effects. That is about two to three 12-ounce cups of coffee, and it counts caffeine from supplements too (FDA, Spilling the Beans caffeine).

Europe's food safety agency sets two lines. A single dose of 200 mg and a daily total of 400 mg are the levels where it saw no concern for adults. It also notes that about 100 mg can disturb sleep in some people (EFSA, caffeine safe intakes). In pregnancy the figure drops: ACOG advises under 200 mg a day (ACOG, caffeine in pregnancy).

These are reference points for healthy adults, not targets. Sensitivity differs, and medicines, heart rhythm problems and anxiety can lower the right number for you.

The capsule

How much caffeine is in one SodaSlim capsule?

One SodaSlim capsule has at least 138 mg of caffeine. That is the printed amount on the Caffeine Anhydrous row, and the label says "Contains caffeine".

Two other rows can add a little more, and the label does not say how much. The green tea row is 130 mg of extract with under 3% caffeine, so under 4 mg (130 x 0.03 = 3.9). The green coffee row prints no caffeine figure at all. For that reason this site writes "at least 138 mg", never "exactly".

Against the references, 138 mg is 34.5% of FDA's 400 mg (138 / 400), or about a third. It is 69% of the 200 mg single-dose line (138 / 200), and it is more than the 100 mg that may affect sleep. The capsule is not for anyone under 18 or pregnant or nursing, so the 200 mg pregnancy line is context, not permission.

Green coffee

How much caffeine is in green coffee bean extract?

It depends on the extract, and the SodaSlim label does not say. Green coffee beans are unroasted coffee seeds, and caffeine is a natural part of the bean.

The label describes this row by its chlorogenic acids, 50%, which is about 65 mg of the 130 mg (130 x 0.50). That leaves about 65 mg of other material, and the label does not split it. No caffeine figure is printed for it, so nobody can add it up from the panel.

The practical step is to treat 138 mg as a floor. We found no published lab report for the capsule, and the lot code on the bottle is a seller reference, not proof.

Your drinks

Which drinks add caffeine? A list of sodas and other drinks

Coffee, tea, cola and energy drinks all add caffeine, and amounts vary by brand and by how strong a cup is brewed. The figures below are typical servings.

FDA and EFSA both publish drink tables, and the range inside one category is wide (FDA, Spilling the Beans caffeine) (EFSA, caffeine safe intakes). A cola is a modest source per can, while FDA puts energy drinks anywhere from 41 to 246 mg per 12 ounces, so some carry more than a capsule.

Real products vary; read the drink label.

SodaSlim is a capsule, not a soda, a can or a drink. The name is the only soda in it.

How do I add up my own caffeine budget?

Start with the capsule already in the cup, then tap the drinks you have in a day. The cup changes color at 200 mg and 400 mg.

The 138 mg is the caffeine row on the SodaSlim label (SodaSlim label); the coffee and tea rows may add some, and the label does not say how much. 200 mg a day is the ACOG pregnancy reference (ACOG, caffeine in pregnancy); 400 mg a day is the FDA general adult reference, about two to three 12-ounce cups of coffee (FDA, Spilling the Beans caffeine). Drink amounts are typical and vary by brand. This is a counting aid, not medical advice: ask a clinician about your own limit.

Worked examples

What does a day of caffeine look like with one capsule?

With one capsule, two ordinary coffees already reach 318 mg, and two more drinks can push the day past 400 mg.

Three sample days, one capsule included
DaySumTotalAgainst 400 mg
Capsule and one black tea138 + 50188 mg212 mg under
Capsule and two 200 ml coffees138 + 90 + 90318 mg82 mg under
Capsule, two coffees, an energy drink and a cola138 + 180 + 80 + 40438 mg38 mg over

The third day lands 38 mg above FDA's reference (438 - 400). A day under the line can still feel like too much if you are sensitive. A 2019 meta-analysis of 13 trials (606 people) said caffeine "might promote" weight loss, but the trials disagreed widely and none used this capsule (Tabrizi 2019, caffeine and weight).

Warning signs

What are the signs of too much caffeine?

Jitters, shakiness, a racing or pounding heartbeat, anxiety, upset stomach and poor sleep are the usual signs of too much caffeine.

FDA places toxic effects near 1,200 mg taken fast, far above the daily reference, but trouble can start much lower in a sensitive person (FDA, Spilling the Beans caffeine). If you feel these signs, stop the capsules, cut other caffeine and ask a clinician.

  1. Racing or pounding heartbeat, chest painStop the capsules. Chest pain, fainting or trouble breathing: call 911 now. A racing heart that will not settle needs medical care.
  2. Jitters, shakiness, anxiety or no sleepCommon signs of too much caffeine. Stop, cut other caffeine and ask a clinician; FDA says the toxic range starts far above the daily reference.
  3. Dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, belly pain, nauseaCan be signs of liver trouble, which has been reported with green tea extract and garcinia products. Stop and get medical care the same day.
  4. Stomach pain, nausea or loose stoolsCommon with caffeine and garcinia. Stop and ask a clinician if it lasts.
  5. Rash, hives or swellingPossible allergy. Stop and get medical help; swelling of the face or throat or trouble breathing is an emergency.

Signs from (FDA, Spilling the Beans caffeine) (LiverTox, green tea) (LiverTox, Garcinia cambogia) (FDA report a problem). This list is not complete. A supplement is never a reason to wait.

Emergency signs

Chest pain, fainting or trouble breathing: call 911. Keep taking prescribed medicine exactly as directed; a supplement is not a substitute for it. Dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, or belly pain can signal liver trouble, reported with some green tea extract and garcinia products: stop and get care.

The label

How does the label's caffeine fit a daily budget?

The label directs one capsule daily and prints a caffeine row of 138 mg, so the capsule alone uses about a third of an adult's 400 mg reference.

The amount is printed, there is no proprietary blend, and the label says "Contains caffeine". The weak spots are the unknown caffeine in the coffee row and the missing lab report. The front line is “Metabolic & Appetite Support*”, a starred statement FDA has not evaluated, and no trial tested it on this capsule.

Check the whole day, not the bottle

Add every source, keep to one capsule, and ask a clinician if your total sits near a limit you were given. Anyone pregnant, nursing, under 18 or on medicines is likely to need a smaller number: see who should not take SodaSlim, the medicines guide and taking it with coffee and tea.

FAQ

Caffeine budget questions

How much caffeine is too much in a day?

For healthy adults, FDA's reference is 400 mg a day from all sources, and EFSA's single-dose line is 200 mg. Some people feel jittery or sleep badly well below that. Pregnancy, medicines and heart conditions lower the number, so ask a clinician for yours.

Does caffeine in a supplement count toward the 400 mg?

Yes. FDA says caffeine from supplements adds to the total from coffee, tea, soda and energy drinks. For SodaSlim, count at least 138 mg per capsule and any extra from the coffee row, which the label does not quantify.

Does the green tea in SodaSlim add caffeine?

A little. The green tea row is 130 mg of extract with under 3% caffeine, so under 4 mg (130 x 0.03 = 3.9). That is small next to the 138 mg caffeine row, but it still counts toward your total.

Which sodas have caffeine?

Cola is the usual one, at about 40 mg in a 355 ml can in the figures we use. Many other sodas list none. Brands vary, so read the can. SodaSlim is a capsule and holds no carbonation.

Can I take SodaSlim and drink coffee?

The label gives no instruction on coffee. Add the coffee to the capsule's 138 mg and compare the total with your limits. If you take medicines or have heart or sleep problems, ask a clinician first.

What is the caffeine limit in pregnancy?

ACOG advises under 200 mg a day in pregnancy. The SodaSlim label says the capsule is not for pregnant or nursing mothers, and one capsule alone holds at least 138 mg, so ask your clinician about all caffeine.
