Green tea extract liver injury and garcinia liver damage: what reports say
Green tea extract liver injury is uncommon but reported, and NIH links garcinia cambogia products to acute liver injury that can be severe or fatal. SodaSlim has a green tea row (about 58 mg of EGCG) and a garcinia row (about 65 mg of HCA). Nothing we found says SodaSlim itself caused harm.

The background
Can a weight-loss supplement injure the liver?
Yes, some can, and the reports are not rare enough to ignore. Supplements follow looser rules than medicines, and FDA does not approve them before sale (FDA 101 supplements).
NCCIH makes the same point from the user's side: supplements can interact with medicines, and product quality and strength can differ from bottle to bottle (NCCIH using supplements wisely). Liver trouble from a supplement is hard to prove in any one person, because it is usually found by ruling out other causes. That is why the case reports below say "linked to" and not "caused by".
The reports concentrate on two of the five SodaSlim rows, garcinia and green tea. They do not concern the whole capsule, and no report we found names SodaSlim.
Green tea
Can green tea extract cause liver injury?
Green tea extract has been implicated in acute liver injury, including liver failure and transplant, according to NIH's LiverTox (LiverTox, green tea). Drinking tea is a different matter from taking a concentrated extract.
NCCIH says liver injury from green tea products is uncommon but has been reported, and that green tea can interact with some medicines (NCCIH, Green tea). EFSA reviewed catechin supplements in 2018 and said EGCG at 800 mg a day or more from supplements raises concern for the liver. It could not set a level it called safe, and it found tea infusions generally not a concern (EFSA 2018, green tea catechins).
The SodaSlim green tea row is 130 mg of extract at 45% EGCG, which is about 58 mg per capsule (130 x 0.45). That is roughly one fourteenth of EFSA's 800 mg level (800 / 58 = 13.8). The low number is not a clearance: EFSA found no level without concern, and the label does not say who tested the percentages. Nobody has studied this capsule's liver effects.
| Item | Amount | Arithmetic |
|---|---|---|
| Green tea extract per capsule | 130 mg | Printed on the label |
| EGCG per capsule | About 58 mg | 130 x 45% |
| EFSA level of concern, supplements | 800 mg a day | As stated by EFSA |
| Label EGCG as a share of that level | About 7% | 58 / 800 |
Garcinia
Can garcinia cambogia cause liver damage?
Garcinia cambogia products have been linked to acute liver injury, which NIH's LiverTox says can be severe or fatal (LiverTox, Garcinia cambogia).
A 2025 review pooled the reports. It counted more than 200 liver adverse events tied to garcinia products, 34 detailed case reports, 1 death and 9 liver transplants, and it noted a caution from the US Pharmacopeia (van Breemen 2025, garcinia liver). Counts like these cannot give a rate, because nobody knows how many people took the products without trouble. They do show that the signal is real.
The SodaSlim garcinia row is 130 mg of extract at 50% HCA, about 65 mg (130 x 0.50). A garcinia trial used far more: a 1998 trial of 135 people gave 1,500 mg of HCA a day for 12 weeks and found no difference from placebo (Heymsfield 1998, garcinia RCT). The label's 65 mg is about 4% of that (65 / 1,500). No trial or case report we found measured liver effects at the label's amount, and none tested SodaSlim.
Warning signs
What are the signs of supplement liver injury?
Dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, belly pain and nausea are the signs to act on.
Liver injury can start quietly, so a person who feels unwell soon after starting any new supplement should stop it and call a clinician. Do not wait for all the signs to appear together. A blood test is how a clinician checks, and it helps to bring the bottle, because the label shows exactly what you took.
- Racing or pounding heartbeat, chest painStop the capsules. Chest pain, fainting or trouble breathing: call 911 now. A racing heart that will not settle needs medical care.
- Jitters, shakiness, anxiety or no sleepCommon signs of too much caffeine. Stop, cut other caffeine and ask a clinician; FDA says the toxic range starts far above the daily reference.
- Dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, belly pain, nauseaCan be signs of liver trouble, which has been reported with green tea extract and garcinia products. Stop and get medical care the same day.
- Stomach pain, nausea or loose stoolsCommon with caffeine and garcinia. Stop and ask a clinician if it lasts.
- Rash, hives or swellingPossible allergy. Stop and get medical help; swelling of the face or throat or trouble breathing is an emergency.
Signs from (FDA, Spilling the Beans caffeine) (LiverTox, green tea) (LiverTox, Garcinia cambogia) (FDA report a problem). This list is not complete. A supplement is never a reason to wait.
Dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, or belly pain: stop the capsules and get medical care today. Chest pain, fainting or trouble breathing: call 911. Keep taking prescribed medicine exactly as directed unless a clinician tells you otherwise.

What does this mean for the SodaSlim capsule?
SodaSlim holds two ingredients that appear in liver reports, and nothing we found says the capsule itself caused harm. The honest answer is that the capsule has not been studied for the liver.
The label does not name the maker, and it prints no lab report. The lot code on the bottle is a seller reference, not proof of testing. The label says to consult a physician before use, especially with a medication or a medical condition, and not to exceed the recommended dose of one capsule daily.
| Row | Per capsule | What the sources report |
|---|---|---|
| Green Tea Extract (45% EGCG) | 130 mg; about 58 mg EGCG | Acute liver injury reported, uncommon; EFSA concern at 800 mg a day |
| Garcinia Extract (50% HCA) | 130 mg; about 65 mg HCA | More than 200 liver events in a 2025 review |
| Other three rows | 130 mg, 130 mg, 138 mg | No liver finding in our sources |
The other three rows are green coffee extract, raspberry ketone and caffeine. We cite no liver reports for them, but that is not proof they cannot cause trouble.
Before you start
Who should talk to a clinician about liver risk first?
Anyone with liver disease or past liver trouble, anyone taking a prescription medicine, and anyone unsure should ask a doctor or pharmacist before taking SodaSlim.
- You have had liver trouble, or a clinician has told you to watch your liver.
- You take prescription medicines, which the liver processes and some supplements can affect.
- You are under 18, pregnant or nursing: the label says the capsule is not for you.
- You already use another green tea or garcinia product: the amounts stack.
If you do take it, keep to one capsule a day and stop at the first warning sign. You can report a reaction to FDA (FDA report a problem). More on other reactions is on the side effects page, and the medicines guide covers interactions. The five rows are explained on the ingredients page.
FAQ
Liver safety questions
Does green tea extract damage the liver?
It can in rare cases. NIH's LiverTox lists green tea extract as implicated in acute liver injury, including failure and transplant, and NCCIH calls it uncommon but reported. Tea made as a drink is treated differently from concentrated extract capsules.
How much EGCG is too much?
No one has set a level that is without concern. EFSA flagged supplements at 800 mg a day of EGCG and could not identify a safe intake. The SodaSlim label has about 58 mg of EGCG per capsule, but that is not a clearance.
Has garcinia cambogia been linked to liver failure?
Yes. A 2025 review counted more than 200 liver events tied to garcinia products, with 1 death and 9 transplants, and NIH says the injury can be severe or fatal. Causation in each case is hard to prove.
Is there a liver test I should ask for?
A clinician decides that. Blood tests can show liver injury, and they are usually ordered when someone has symptoms or a history. Tell the clinician every supplement you take and bring the bottle.
What should I do if my urine turns dark on a supplement?
Stop the supplement and get medical care the same day. Dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, and belly pain can all point to the liver. Do not wait to see if it passes.
Has SodaSlim been tested for liver safety?
We found no study or lab report. The label prints every amount, but it does not name the manufacturer, and the seller's lot code is not a test result. Treat it as untested and ask a clinician first.
