Caffeine anhydrous in SodaSlim: how much caffeine is 138 mg, and what else counts?

Quick answer

Caffeine anhydrous is the fourth row on the SodaSlim label: 138 mg a capsule, so a capsule has at least 138 mg of caffeine. That is about a third of FDA's 400 mg daily reference for healthy adults (138 / 400 = 0.345), before any coffee or tea. The label says not for under 18, pregnant or nursing.

The row

What is caffeine anhydrous in SodaSlim?

Caffeine anhydrous is caffeine in dry, concentrated powder form, and it is the fourth row on the SodaSlim panel at 138 mg per capsule (SodaSlim label).

The label also prints "Contains Caffeine". The capsule has at least 138 mg, and we say "at least" because other rows add a little. The green tea row is under 3% caffeine, and 130 x 3% is under 4 mg. The green coffee row's own caffeine is not stated.

SodaSlim is a capsule, not a soda, but the caffeine is real, and it is the largest single number on the panel.

What the studies foundFDA says 400 mg of caffeine a day is not generally associated with dangerous effects in healthy adults, about two to three 12-ounce cups of coffee, and that caffeine in supplements counts toward that total. EFSA says single doses of 200 mg and 400 mg a day are the levels where it saw no safety concern for adults, and about 100 mg may affect sleep for some people. A 2019 meta-analysis of 13 trials (606 people) found caffeine 'might promote' weight loss, but the results varied widely between studies. One capsule is 138 mg, so coffee, tea and energy drinks on top add up quickly.
Main cautionCaffeine can cause jitters, a faster heartbeat, stomach upset and poor sleep, and the label says not for people under 18 or pregnant or nursing. ACOG advises under 200 mg a day in pregnancy. Use the caffeine budget tool on this site to add up your day.

The numbers

How much is 138 mg of caffeine compared with daily limits?

It is about a third of the FDA reference and about 70% of the EFSA single-dose level.

FDA says 400 mg a day is not generally associated with dangerous effects in healthy adults, which it equates with about two to three 12-ounce cups of coffee. It adds that caffeine in supplements counts toward the total (FDA, Spilling the Beans caffeine). 138 / 400 = 0.345, so one capsule uses about 35% of that reference, and 400 - 138 leaves 262 mg for everything else.

EFSA gives 200 mg for a single dose and 400 mg a day for adults, and says about 100 mg may affect sleep in some people (EFSA, caffeine safe intakes). 138 / 200 = 0.69, and 138 is 1.38 times 100. These are reference levels for the general public, not advice for you.

Add up your day

How much caffeine do you get from SodaSlim plus coffee or tea?

You get the capsule's 138 mg plus every drink, so the total is yours to add up.

The cup below starts with the capsule already in it. Tap the drinks you have in a day. Amounts vary by brand and brew, so the figures are typical, not exact.

Typical caffeine per serving
Typical amounts, which vary by brand; check the drink label.
DrinkServingCaffeine
Espresso shot60 ml80 mg
Filter coffee200 ml90 mg
Black tea220 ml50 mg
Green tea12 oz37 mg
Cola355 ml can40 mg
Energy drink250 ml can80 mg

The 138 mg is the caffeine row on the SodaSlim label (SodaSlim label); the coffee and tea rows may add some, and the label does not say how much. 200 mg a day is the ACOG pregnancy reference (ACOG, caffeine in pregnancy); 400 mg a day is the FDA general adult reference, about two to three 12-ounce cups of coffee (FDA, Spilling the Beans caffeine). Drink amounts are typical and vary by brand. This is a counting aid, not medical advice: ask a clinician about your own limit.

The studies

Does caffeine help with weight loss?

A 2019 meta-analysis said caffeine "might promote" weight loss, but the studies disagreed widely.

It pooled 13 trials with 606 people, and the variation between them was very high (Tabrizi 2019, caffeine and weight). That means the results are not consistent enough to give a figure a reader can expect. No trial tested this capsule.

The label line is “Promotes Energy Production From Fat*”. We found no trial showing that the capsule does that, and the star leads to the FDA statement that the claim has not been evaluated.

Side effects

What are the side effects of a caffeine supplement?

Caffeine can cause jitters, a faster heartbeat, stomach upset and poor sleep, mostly as the total goes up.

FDA lists toxic effects such as seizures at about 1,200 mg taken quickly, far above the 138 mg in one capsule. The label says not to exceed the recommended dose: one capsule a day (FDA, Spilling the Beans caffeine).

Get care

Chest pain, fainting or trouble breathing: call 911. A racing heart that will not settle, or severe jitters, means stop and call a clinician.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist first if you take a thyroid, blood pressure, heart-rhythm, anxiety, depression, sleep or diabetes medicine; caffeine and green tea extract can interact with medicines (NCCIH using supplements wisely). Keep taking prescribed medicine as directed.

Who should skip it

Who should avoid caffeine supplements?

The label says SodaSlim is not for anyone under 18 or pregnant or nursing.

ACOG advises under 200 mg of caffeine a day in pregnancy, and one capsule is at least 138 mg before any drink (ACOG, caffeine in pregnancy). People with anxiety, sleep trouble or heart conditions should ask a clinician first. See who should not take SodaSlim and the caffeine budget guide.

FAQ

Caffeine questions

How much caffeine is in SodaSlim?

At least 138 mg a capsule. The caffeine anhydrous row is 138 mg, the green tea row adds under 4 mg, and the green coffee row's own caffeine is not stated, so the true total can be higher.

Is 138 mg of caffeine a lot?

It is about a third of FDA's 400 mg daily reference for healthy adults (138 / 400 = 0.345), and 69% of EFSA's 200 mg single-dose level. Your coffee and tea come on top.

What is caffeine anhydrous?

Caffeine anhydrous is caffeine with the water removed, sold as a dry, concentrated powder. It is the same compound found in coffee and tea. SodaSlim lists it as its own row at 138 mg.

When should you take caffeine capsules?

The label gives no time of day, only to take one capsule daily. EFSA says about 100 mg may affect sleep in some people, so a capsule late in the day is worth thinking about.

Can SodaSlim caffeine cause side effects?

It can, as with any caffeine: jitters, faster heartbeat, stomach upset and poor sleep. Stop and call a clinician for a racing heart that will not settle. Chest pain or trouble breathing means 911.

Does caffeine burn fat?

We found no trial showing the capsule does. A 2019 meta-analysis of 13 trials said caffeine might promote weight loss, but results varied widely.
