Raspberry ketone supplement: what the SodaSlim row is and what the evidence shows
Raspberry ketone is the second row on the SodaSlim label: 130 mg a capsule, with no percentage or source printed. We found no human trial of the ketone alone. The idea rests on a 10-week mouse study and one human trial of a six-ingredient product with 45 completers. No trial tested SodaSlim.

The row
What is raspberry ketone in a supplement?
Raspberry ketone is a compound that gives red raspberries much of their smell, and supplements usually use a lab-made form of it.
On the SodaSlim panel the row reads Raspberry Ketone, 130 mg per capsule (SodaSlim label). Unlike the coffee, garcinia and tea rows, it prints no percentage and no plant part. The label does not say whether the ketone comes from fruit or from a lab, who tested it or how pure it is.
The capsule is not a soda or a drink. Four of the five rows print 130 mg, and this is one of them.

| Name on the label | Raspberry Ketone |
|---|---|
| What it is | A compound that gives red raspberries their smell, usually made synthetically for supplements; the label does not say if this one is natural or synthetic |
| What it is sold for | Sold as a fat-burning ingredient |
| Amount per capsule (label) | 130 mg |
| Amount used in research | A mouse study (0.5% to 2% of the diet, 10 weeks); one human trial of a six-ingredient product |
| What the studies found | The idea comes from a 2005 mouse study in which raspberry ketone was mixed into a high-fat diet at 0.5% to 2% of the feed for 10 weeks. The only human trial we found tested a six-ingredient product in 45 completers, so it cannot say what the ketone did alone. The NIH fact sheet says there is insufficient research on it in people. |
| Main caution | No safety trial of this amount in people was found. Because the evidence is missing, treat any claim about it with care and ask a clinician if you take medicines or have a medical condition. |
Where the idea started
Where did the raspberry ketone idea come from?
It came from mice, not people. A 2005 study mixed raspberry ketone into a high-fat diet at 0.5% to 2% of the feed for 10 weeks (Morimoto 2005, raspberry ketone mice).
The feed amounts were large. Animal results often fail to carry over to humans, and this study cannot say what 130 mg does for you.
We found no source that converts the mouse amounts into a human dose, so we make no claim either way.
Human data
Is there a raspberry ketone weight loss study in people?
We found no human trial of raspberry ketone alone. The only human trial we found tested a six-ingredient product.
That 2013 trial had 45 people who completed it, and the product held several ingredients at once, so the result cannot be credited to the ketone (Lopez 2013, multi-ingredient raspberry ketone). The NIH fact sheet on supplements for weight loss says raspberry ketone has been studied only in combination and that research is insufficient for firm conclusions (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss).
| Source | Who or what | Amount and time | What it can tell us |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2005 study | Mice on a high-fat diet | 0.5% to 2% of feed, 10 weeks | Animal data only |
| 2013 trial | 45 completers | Six-ingredient product | Cannot isolate the ketone |
| NIH fact sheet | Review of the field | Not applicable | Insufficient research |
| SodaSlim | No trial found | 130 mg a capsule | Nothing to report |
Reading the claim
Does raspberry ketone burn fat?
We found no human trial showing that it does, so we make no such claim for the capsule.
The front of the bottle has the line “Promotes Energy Production From Fat*”. The star leads to the FDA statement that the claim has not been evaluated. A supplement may describe an effect on the body's normal structure or function, but it may not claim to treat a disease (FDA structure/function claims). The FTC says health claims need reliable scientific evidence (FTC health products guidance).
The gauge below is an editor's reading of how well human studies support each label claim. It is a judgment, not a measurement, and not a rating of SodaSlim.

Our reading of the sources, not a measurement. Each needle is an editor's judgment of how well human studies support the label claim for that one ingredient, at studied amounts. It does not rate SodaSlim: no study tested the capsule or this five-row combination.

What are the raspberry ketone side effects?
We found no human safety trial for raspberry ketone at 130 mg, so we cannot list its side effects or say what a safe amount is.
A missing safety study is not the same as a safe finding. It means nobody has measured.
Stop and call a clinician for a racing heart, chest pain, fainting or trouble breathing; chest pain, fainting or trouble breathing means 911. Ask a doctor or pharmacist before taking the capsule if you use any medicine. Keep taking prescribed medicine as directed. Caffeine and green tea extract in the same capsule can interact with some medicines, so the whole list matters (NCCIH using supplements wisely).
The row is not the only issue. Read the caffeine budget for the total, and side effects for the full list.
Before you buy
What should you ask before taking a raspberry ketone supplement?
Ask three things: what the evidence is, what else is in the capsule, and whether your medicines and health conditions allow it.
What is the evidence?
For this row: one mouse study and one mixed-product trial.
What else is inside?
Four more rows, including at least 138 mg of caffeine. See the formula.
Who is it not for?
The label says under 18, pregnant or nursing. See who should not take it.
FDA does not approve supplements before sale (FDA 101 supplements).

What do the other four rows show?

FAQ
Raspberry ketone questions
Is raspberry ketone the same as eating raspberries?
No. Supplements usually use a lab-made form of the compound, not whole fruit. The SodaSlim label does not say whether its 130 mg is from fruit or made in a lab, and it prints no purity figure.
Does raspberry ketone work?
We found no human trial of the ketone alone, so we cannot say. The idea comes from a mouse study, and the one human trial tested a six-ingredient product with 45 completers. No trial tested SodaSlim.
How much raspberry ketone is in SodaSlim?
130 mg per capsule, as printed on the Supplement Facts panel. No percentage is printed, so unlike the coffee and garcinia rows there is no derived active amount. One capsule a day for 30 days is 3,900 mg across a bottle (130 x 30).
What are raspberry ketone supplement side effects?
We found no human safety data at this amount, so we cannot list them. Stop and get care for chest pain, fainting or a racing heart that will not settle. Ask a clinician first if you take medicines.
Is raspberry ketone studied in people?
Barely. The NIH fact sheet says it has been studied only in combination and that research is insufficient. We found no trial that tested it by itself.
Can I take raspberry ketone while pregnant?
The SodaSlim label says not for pregnant or nursing mothers. Ask your clinician. ACOG advises under 200 mg of caffeine a day in pregnancy, and this capsule has at least 138 mg.
