Garcinia cambogia for weight loss? What the SodaSlim row holds and what studies found
Garcinia cambogia is the third row on the SodaSlim label: 130 mg of extract at 50% HCA, so about 65 mg (130 x 50%). A 12-week trial of 1,500 mg HCA in 135 people found no difference from placebo. Liver injury reports exist for garcinia products. No trial tested SodaSlim.

The row
What is garcinia cambogia, and what does the SodaSlim label print?
Garcinia cambogia is a tropical fruit, and supplements use an extract of its rind that is standardized to hydroxycitric acid, or HCA.
The SodaSlim panel prints Garcinia Extract (Garcinia cambogia)(fruit)(50% HCA), 130 mg per capsule (SodaSlim label). At 50%, that is 130 x 0.50 = 65 mg of HCA. The label does not say which form of HCA is used, who measured the 50%, or what the rest of the row is.
SodaSlim is a capsule, not a soda. This is the third of five rows.

| Name on the label | Garcinia Extract (Garcinia cambogia)(fruit)(50% HCA) |
|---|---|
| What it is | An extract of a tropical fruit rind; HCA stands for hydroxycitric acid, and at 50% the 130 mg row holds about 65 mg of it (130 x 50%) |
| What it is sold for | Sold as an appetite and fat ingredient |
| Amount per capsule (label) | 130 mg |
| Amount used in research | A 1998 JAMA trial (1,500 mg HCA a day, 12 weeks, 135 people); a 2011 meta-analysis |
| What the studies found | A 12-week JAMA trial gave 1,500 mg of HCA a day to 135 people and found no difference from placebo. A 2011 meta-analysis found a 0.88 kg difference whose range touched zero, and stomach events were twice as common in one study. The label's row holds about 65 mg of HCA. NIH's LiverTox lists garcinia products as linked to acute liver injury, and a 2025 review counted more than 200 liver adverse events, including one death and nine transplants. |
| Main caution | Garcinia products have been linked to acute liver injury, sometimes severe. Stop and get care if you have dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, or belly pain, and tell your clinician if you have liver disease. |
The studies
Does garcinia cambogia work for weight loss?
Trials found little. The best-known one found no difference from placebo, and the pooled result was under a kilogram.
The 1998 JAMA trial gave 135 adults 1,500 mg of HCA a day for 12 weeks and found no difference from placebo (Heymsfield 1998, garcinia RCT). A 2011 meta-analysis of trials found a 0.88 kg difference, but the range of uncertainty touched zero, so it could be no effect at all. Stomach events were twice as common in one study (Onakpoya 2011, garcinia meta).
No trial tested SodaSlim. The label line is “Supports Craving Control & Satiety*”, and we found no trial showing that the capsule does that.
| Source | Who | Dose and time | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1998 JAMA trial | 135 adults | 1,500 mg HCA a day, 12 weeks | No difference from placebo |
| 2011 meta-analysis | Pooled trials | Varied | 0.88 kg; interval touches zero |
| SodaSlim label | No trial found | About 65 mg HCA a day | Nothing to report |
Dose gap
How does 65 mg of HCA compare with the studied dose?
The label has about 4% of the dose in the JAMA trial: 65 / 1,500 = 0.043.
Said another way, the trial dose is about 23 times the label amount (1,500 / 65 = 23.1). Even at that dose the trial found no difference, so a smaller amount gives a reader no reason to expect more. The bars below show how an editor reads the evidence for each row; it is a judgment, not a measurement of SodaSlim.
Liver reports
Can garcinia cambogia cause liver problems?
Yes, liver injury has been reported with garcinia products, and some cases were severe. Nothing says SodaSlim was involved.
NIH's LiverTox lists garcinia products as linked to acute liver injury, which can be severe or fatal (LiverTox, Garcinia cambogia). A 2025 review counted more than 200 liver adverse events, with 34 case reports, 1 death and 9 transplants, and noted a USP caution (van Breemen 2025, garcinia liver).
Causes were not proven in every case. We found no report that names this capsule. We also cannot rule out a risk, and the label does not list any liver test.
Dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, or belly pain means stop the capsule and call a clinician. Chest pain, fainting or trouble breathing: call 911.

What are the other garcinia side effects?
In one study of HCA, stomach events were twice as common (Onakpoya 2011, garcinia meta).
We found no source that gives a safe amount of HCA, so we do not offer one. The capsule also holds caffeine, which has its own effects. Add your day on the caffeine budget.
Ask a doctor or pharmacist first if you take any medicine or have liver disease. Keep taking prescribed medicine as directed; a supplement is not a substitute (NCCIH using supplements wisely).

Garcinia cambogia questions
What is HCA?
HCA is hydroxycitric acid, the compound garcinia extract is standardized to. SodaSlim's row is labeled 50% HCA, so 130 mg of extract holds about 65 mg of HCA (130 x 50%). The label does not say which form of HCA it uses.
