Green Tea Extract Liver Injury: What NCCIH and EFSA Say
Green tea extract liver injury is uncommon, but it has been reported, and NCCIH says so plainly. Brewed tea is a different matter from concentrated capsules. SodaSlim's green tea row gives about 58 mg of EGCG (130 mg x 45%), against EFSA's 800 mg a day concern level. No trial tested SodaSlim.

The source
What does NCCIH say about green tea extract and liver injury?
NCCIH says liver injury from green tea products is uncommon but has been reported, and that green tea can interact with some medicines (NCCIH, Green tea).
The same page describes a modest effect on body weight. NIH's LiverTox goes further on the safety side: it lists green tea extract as implicated in acute liver injury, including liver failure and transplant, and notes a genetic marker (HLA-B*35:01) that may raise the chance (LiverTox, green tea). Both are case-based. Neither gives a rate.
Tea versus extract
Is brewed green tea different from green tea extract liver damage reports?
Yes. The reports concern concentrated extracts, and EFSA found tea infusions generally not a concern (EFSA 2018, green tea catechins).
EFSA reviewed catechin supplements in 2018. It said EGCG at 800 mg a day or more from supplements raises concern for the liver, and it could not identify a dose without concern. A cup of tea holds far less, and it comes with water and slow sipping. A capsule delivers a measured dose at once.
| Item | Amount | Arithmetic |
|---|---|---|
| Green Tea Extract row | 130 mg | Printed per capsule |
| EGCG in that row | About 58 mg | 130 x 45% |
| EFSA concern level | 800 mg a day | Supplements, as stated |
| Label share of that level | About 7% | 58 / 800 |
A low share is not a clearance. The label does not say who tested the 45% figure, and EFSA named no level without concern.
Warning signs
What are the signs of green tea liver safety trouble?
Dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, and belly pain are the signs to act on.
Stop the supplement and call a clinician the same day if they appear. Bring the bottle. A blood test is how liver injury is checked.
- Racing or pounding heartbeat, chest painStop the capsules. Chest pain, fainting or trouble breathing: call 911 now. A racing heart that will not settle needs medical care.
- Jitters, shakiness, anxiety or no sleepCommon signs of too much caffeine. Stop, cut other caffeine and ask a clinician; FDA says the toxic range starts far above the daily reference.
- Dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, belly pain, nauseaCan be signs of liver trouble, which has been reported with green tea extract and garcinia products. Stop and get medical care the same day.
- Stomach pain, nausea or loose stoolsCommon with caffeine and garcinia. Stop and ask a clinician if it lasts.
- Rash, hives or swellingPossible allergy. Stop and get medical help; swelling of the face or throat or trouble breathing is an emergency.
Signs from (FDA, Spilling the Beans caffeine) (LiverTox, green tea) (LiverTox, Garcinia cambogia) (FDA report a problem). This list is not complete. A supplement is never a reason to wait.
Keep taking prescribed medicine exactly as directed unless a clinician says otherwise. Chest pain, fainting or trouble breathing: call 911.

Does this change how to read the SodaSlim label?
It adds one question to ask a clinician: whether green tea extract suits you at all.
SodaSlim is a capsule with one green tea row among five. The label says to consult a physician before use, especially with a medication or a medical condition. It is not for anyone under 18 or pregnant or nursing. No lab report is published, and no trial tested the capsule. The liver safety guide and the green tea extract page go further.
