Green Tea Supplement Weight Loss: What Trials Found

Quick answer

A green tea supplement for weight loss showed almost nothing outside Japan in a Cochrane review: a difference of 0.04 kg, which the authors called not likely clinically important. SodaSlim's green tea row is 130 mg of extract, with about 58 mg of EGCG. No trial tested SodaSlim, and no weight result is promised.

The review

Does a green tea supplement work for weight loss?

The best pooled evidence says the effect is tiny to none. A Cochrane review found a difference of 0.04 kg in trials outside Japan, which the authors judged not likely clinically important (Jurgens 2012, Cochrane green tea).

NCCIH describes a modest effect on body weight (NCCIH, Green tea). Modest here means small enough that a bathroom scale would not show it. Both sources pooled many extracts at many doses, so neither says what one particular capsule does.

Caffeine

Is it the green tea, or the caffeine, in green tea coffee weight loss claims?

Often it cannot be told apart, because many green tea products also hold caffeine, and so does coffee.

A 2019 meta-analysis of caffeine alone pooled 13 trials and 606 people. Results were very inconsistent (I2 above 91%), and the authors said caffeine "might promote" weight loss (Tabrizi 2019, caffeine and weight). When a capsule has both tea extract and added caffeine, a trial cannot say which did what. SodaSlim has 138 mg of caffeine as its own row, plus under 4 mg from the tea row (130 x under 3%), and the coffee row's own caffeine is not stated.

The label

What does 130 mg of green tea extract hold?

It holds about 58 mg of EGCG, the catechin most studied in green tea (130 x 45% = 58.5).

The label also prints 98% polyphenols and 75% catechins, and says nothing about who measured them. The chart below sets label amounts against studied or reference amounts on a log scale.

  • Studies: chlorogenic acid at 500 mg a day or more in three trials (103 people); the label's about 65 mg is 130 mg x 50%. Studies used about 7.7 times the label amount. (Kanchanasurakit 2023, chlorogenic acid) (Asbaghi 2020, green coffee meta)

  • Raspberry ketone130 mg on the label

No human trial of raspberry ketone alone was found; the animal study mixed it into feed at 0.5% to 2% of the diet. No human trial range found. (Morimoto 2005, raspberry ketone mice) (Lopez 2013, multi-ingredient raspberry ketone)

  • Garcinia (HCA, about)65 mg on the label

Studies: 1,500 mg of HCA a day for 12 weeks in the JAMA trial (135 people); the label's about 65 mg is 130 mg x 50%. Studies used about 23 times the label amount. (Heymsfield 1998, garcinia RCT) (Onakpoya 2011, garcinia meta)

  • Caffeine138 mg on the label

Reference levels: 200 mg a day in pregnancy (ACOG) and 400 mg a day for healthy adults (FDA); not study doses. A reference level, not a study dose: the label is 34% of the higher level. (ACOG, caffeine in pregnancy) (FDA, Spilling the Beans caffeine)

  • Green tea (EGCG, about)58 mg on the label

Reference level: EFSA raised a safety concern about EGCG supplements at 800 mg a day; the label's about 58 mg is 130 mg x 45%. A reference level, not a study dose: the label is 7% of the higher level. (EFSA 2018, green tea catechins) (Jurgens 2012, Cochrane green tea)

Log scale: each gridline is ten times the one before. Studied ranges are daily amounts from the trials linked on each row; rows marked as a reference show a reference level, not a study dose. A bar being far away does not mean the capsule is unsafe or useless; it means the study results cannot be borrowed for it, because none tested SodaSlim or this five-row combination.

Care

What should a reader weigh before trying one?

Weigh the small effect against the known cautions, and ask a clinician if any apply.

EFSA found no dose of EGCG supplements without concern for the liver, and NIH links green tea extract to acute liver injury in reports (EFSA 2018, green tea catechins). Ask a doctor or pharmacist first if you take medicine, because caffeine and green tea extract can interact with it. The label says not for under 18, pregnant or nursing. Keep taking prescribed medicine. Chest pain, fainting or trouble breathing: call 911. See the green tea extract page.

FAQ

SodaSlim questions people ask

How much weight can green tea extract take off?

Outside Japan, a Cochrane review found a difference of 0.04 kg, called not likely clinically important. That is a pooled figure, not a promise, and no trial tested SodaSlim.

Does drinking green tea work better than capsules?

We found no source comparing them for weight. EFSA does say tea infusions are generally not a concern, while concentrated extract has liver reports.

Is the caffeine doing the work?

Possibly, but trials usually cannot separate them. A 2019 review of caffeine alone was very inconsistent and said it might promote weight loss.
