Does raspberry ketone help with weight loss?

We found no human trial showing it does. NIH's fact sheet says raspberry ketone has been studied only in combination with other ingredients, and that there is insufficient research to draw firm conclusions (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss).

That leaves a gap between how often the ingredient is advertised and how little is known. A raspberry ketone supplement is a bottle of an ingredient whose effects in people are unmeasured.

Where the idea came from

What did the animal research find?

The idea comes mainly from mice. A 2005 study fed mice raspberry ketone at 0.5% to 2% of their diet for 10 weeks, alongside a high-fat diet (Morimoto 2005, raspberry ketone mice).

Those amounts were very large for the animals' size. A capsule is not a diet, and a mouse is not a person, so the result does not carry over. The only human trial we found tested a six-ingredient product on 45 people who finished it, so it cannot tell the ketone apart from the other five (Lopez 2013, multi-ingredient raspberry ketone). Cell findings face the same limit: a dish is not a body.

What does the raspberry ketone supplement row on SodaSlim show?
