Weight Loss Supplement Ingredients: What Each One Has Shown

Quick answer

Weight loss supplement ingredients usually have small, short or inconsistent human studies. NIH says little is known. The five on the SodaSlim label show it: green coffee, about 1.23 kg in a 2020 meta-analysis; garcinia, 0.88 kg; green tea, 0.04 kg; caffeine, inconsistent; raspberry ketone, no human trial alone.

The big picture

What do we know about weight loss supplement ingredients?

Less than the bottles suggest. NIH's fact sheet says little is known about these products and summarizes each ingredient separately, often as insufficient or weak (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss).

FDA does not approve supplements before sale, and a maker may describe an effect on normal body structure or function with a disclaimer (FDA structure/function claims). That is why a label can carry a starred line with no trial behind it. The question to ask of each ingredient is what people, not mice, were given, for how long, and what changed.

Five ingredients

What did studies find for each common ingredient?

Each shows a small difference at best, usually at a different dose from the label's.

Five ingredients on the SodaSlim label and the evidence found
IngredientLabel per capsuleWhat studies found
Green coffee extract130 mg; chlorogenic acids about 65 mg15 trials, 897 people: 1.23 kg difference (Asbaghi 2020, green coffee meta)
Garcinia cambogia130 mg; HCA about 65 mg0.88 kg, interval touches zero (Onakpoya 2011, garcinia meta)
Green tea extract130 mg; EGCG about 58 mg0.04 kg outside Japan (Jurgens 2012, Cochrane green tea)
Caffeine138 mg13 trials, 606 people, very inconsistent (Tabrizi 2019, caffeine and weight)
Raspberry ketone130 mgNo human trial of the ketone alone

The studied doses often dwarf the label. The green coffee meta-analysis found no dose-response with chlorogenic acid, and a garcinia trial used 1,500 mg of HCA against the label's 65 mg. No trial tested SodaSlim.

Reading the panel

How do you read a Supplement Facts panel?

Start with serving size, then the amount per row, then what is missing.

  • Serving size and count: SodaSlim prints 1 capsule and 30 servings.
  • Amount per row: every row prints milligrams here, and there is no hidden blend.
  • Percent standardized: a "50% HCA" tag lets you work out the active part (130 x 50% = 65 mg).
  • Daily Value: the double star means none has been established.
  • Missing: the maker's name, a lab report, and any trial of the product.

How does a metabolism support supplement label compare?

SodaSlim's front line, “Metabolic & Appetite Support*”, is a starred claim, and the studies above are the test of it. Browse each row below.

Caffeine and green tea extract can interact with medicines, so ask your doctor or pharmacist first, and keep taking prescribed medicine. Chest pain, fainting or trouble breathing: call 911. Garcinia and green tea extract have been linked to liver injury in NIH reports. The Supplement Facts page transcribes the label.

FAQ

SodaSlim questions people ask

Do weight loss supplement ingredients have to be proven?

No. FDA does not approve supplements before sale, and makers may describe structure or function with a disclaimer. Proof of an effect is not required before a product is sold.

How can I tell a supplement website is honest?

Look for printed amounts, a named seller, no promised results, and no invented reviews. The FTC's guide to weight-loss ads lists the false promises to watch for.

Is a percentage like 50% HCA a quality guarantee?

No. It says how much of the extract is the named compound, but not who measured it. SodaSlim's label prints percentages and does not say who tested them.
